One night I came across someone preaching for awareness regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Se was on Israel's side. It was already progressing far into the topic, but I just sat for a while to listen. Then a delegate came to me and asked for my opinion.

Me: Well, I happened to be supporting Hamas. The very one you think is the main culprit and terror.

Se: You understand that. I should be able to expect that, but you just seemed to be someone calm and peaceful. Aren't you one of the Muslims who love peace, not war?

Me: That's right. And so are you. You don't want war to continue either. I've seen one of your videos. I liked it.

Se: I'm glad. Did it invoke something in you, like, the need to stop this war? No, I'm not trying to force our ideas onto you. I just wanted to hear your opinions.

Me: ... I could be one of the worst at giving opinions, especially when it's not my specialty we're talking about.

Se: It's okay. Don't take it too seriously. Let's make this a peaceful conversation. We're friends, at least from now on.

Me: Nice to meet you then. What should I call you?

Se: Veldrasqa. And you are?

Me: My, that's a beautiful name. Please call me Sheen.

Se: So is yours! What does it mean?

Me: The way you heard it, Sheen as in 'sheen' in English.

Se: Like, shiny, lustrous, like that?

Me: Haha, it's just a nick though.

Se: No wonder. What's your real name then?

Me: That's your homework.

Se: *stunned* Ha, you're an interesting one. By the way, my name means 'light from the north'. It's from an old language, I don't even think it still exists.

Me: Nice, we're both of lights.

Se: Our respective Gods are our lights after all.

Me: You bet.

Se: So may I...?

Me: Yes?

Se: I was wondering what you thought about the video. Or about us.

Me: Personally I think you're wonderful. We are one in terms of peace-loving. The God that we both submit to loves peace too. We are basically like the sunlight that pierces through two holes, from one source but it differs into two.

Se: I beg your pardon, but why do I think I've heard of that before?

Me: It's the same thing the Priest from 1400 years ago said to our messengers.

Se: Ah yes! I see!

Me: Actually, ahem, I'm kinda surprised you know that.

Se: I happened to study about Islam before, though I know my knowledge is not as vast as yours.

Me: Just as my knowledge is not as vast as those living there regarding this conflict.

Se: ...

Me: Hm?

Se: Ack, sorry. Go on. I just wanted to listen.

Me: I'm not sure what I should say unless you ask me something. I just, well..

Se: I understand, it's okay. So... *thinking* Where should we start..

Me: *waiting*

Se: That's right, to be frank, who do you think is to be blamed in this conflict?

Me: *grin* Do you think I'm gonna say 'your government' a.k.a zionists?

Se: *surprised* No?

Me: I don't know who is to be blamed. I just know what should be done.

Se: What could that be?

Me: The same as you do, to put a stop to this war, the way it should be.

Se: How should it be?

Me: The oppressed saved, the innocent freed. Those responsible for this crime punished. For Muslims and Jews to live peacefully like they used to, not with either side trying to overpower the other.

Se: As I thought, you are thinking the same thing as we do! I could see it your eyes.

Me: Haha. I think I said so earlier.

Se: Yes you did. I felt the urge to repeat that. *grin* I trust you don't hate Israelis nor Jews.

Me: Of course not. Aren't you gonna ask who do I hate?

Se: If you don't mind.

Me: I dunno, sorry, that was intentional.

Se: Eh?

Me: Never mind. Skip that.

Se: No way you just caught me. Who do you hate?

Me: I don't know who should I hate. I'm a rather perfectionist.

Se: I'm really sorry but I can't catch up with what you're trying to say.

Me: God is very loving right?

Se: Yes of course.

Me: And there are so many people that God loves. But I don't know who they are simply by my own judging. So it would be terrible if the person I hate happens to be the person that God loves, don't you think?

Se: I see. So that's what you mean.

Me: It's better to think how I should love rather than who I should hate.

Se: Shouldn't you be hating violence and the such?

Me: Of course I do.

Se: ... okay, so you mean you just hate the essentials, not the very people. Is that correct?

Me: Bingo! You just read my mind.

Se: That means you shouldn't be supporting terrorists either, correct?

Me: Correct.

Se: That means, you don't believe Hamas is a terrorist organization, correct?

Me: Correct.

Se: And what made you think so?

Me: Their leaders came to us for their side of the story, just like you.

Se: And you choose them over us. Ahem, I'm not trying to be discriminative, but is it because you are of the same religion?

Me: I've thought about that over and over.

Se: ?

Me: Yes, but no.

Se: *wait for a few seconds* Ah, please elaborate.

Me: Sorry, I'm always like this.

Se: It's okay. I've met some people like you, though you're a bit different, or special should I say.

Me: You say that to many people?

Se: *laugh* You caught me.

Me: You're very honest, but I can be dead honest. You sound like a salesman trying to convince a buyer.

Se: Am I? I'll take that as a compliment.

Me: Ah, I'm not trying to be rude. I just inherited that trait... of what people call being 'downright rude'.

Se: No, I don't mind at all. Everyone should be honest.

Me: Yeah.

Se: You're not just anybody either.

Me: I'm just human.

Se: *contemplate* Back to the topic. What made you choose Hamas over Israel?

Me: Hmm... I can't really put this right.. but I listen to scholars, and so far I've seen no respectable scholar who defies Hamas. In fact they say we should support them and believe in them. That's all.

Se: By respectable scholars you mean, those who aren't very liberal?

Me: How do you define liberal?

Se: Erm, you know, the usual thing. Like, not very open-minded.

Me: If they're not open-minded I wouldn't call them scholars.

Se: Okay, it is in your right after all to decide who to respect. Just as how we respect our scholars.

Me: *grin* We are the same after all.

Se: I see, that's how it is. It is very nice to hear from you.

Me: Same here.

Se: If you don't mind, I would like to use your opinion for our research. Thanks for giving the time to talk to me.

Me: Thank you for just being that very kind you too.

Se: First time someone ever thanked me for that. Well then, may we meet again in the near future.

Me: Have a fine day. Let's both pray for peace.

Se: You too. *turn around to leave, then stop* I forgot. There's one more thing I wanted to ask.

Me: Yes?

Se: Do you believe that all muslims will go to heaven?

Me: That's up to God to decide.

Se: Hmm. *smiling* What about us?

Me: What?

Se: Will we go to heaven?

Me: That's also, up to God to decide.

Se: But we don't submit to the same God that you do. So accordingly we should be thrown into hell.

Me: *blink* I guess we are from two different holes after all. And I don't mean by religion.

Se: Personally?

Me: Yeah.

Se: I take it you don't have the answer to that one. Or you just don't want to give a wrong opinion.

Me: Not even close. You know God knows everything, every single thing about us that even we ourselves don't. God knows the very depth of our hearts. And God is very loving.

Se: *smile* I think I get you.

Me: God covers all dimensions, including time. God knows the past, the present, the future. In fact, God doesn't even need to use those terms because God is everywhere, every moment. Right this moment, God knows what will become of this conflict, or what kind of sin every each of us will commit, or who will turn out to be the betrayer. God knows all that, and we are all waiting, but God doesn't need to wait.

Se: ...

Me: *look up* What was the question again? Ah, yes.

Se: Pfft-.. *laugh* Ah, you're remarkable.

Me: I got caught up. You know what it's like when you have to describe someone you love the most. You forget everything. *grin*

Se: I wish.. we met earlier, in a different conversation, under the same light.

Me: You wouldn't.. oh well. That's why life is interesting.

Se: Say, can I contact you later?

Me: Don't worry, we are to meet again. Even if not in this world, definitely in the next.

Se: That makes me want your number more and more.

Me: ...just e-mail, ok?

Se: Okay, sure! By the way here's my card.

Bersedihlah.

Bukan kerana agamamu telah dihina, mahupun dirimu yang dihina. Tetapi bersedihlah kerana si pemfitnah itu masih belum mendapat hidayah dari Allah yang Maha Pemurah. Kasihanilah ketidak-tahuan dia akan indahnya Islam dan benarnya akhirat. Kasihanilah dia yang belum mengenal apa itu azab, apa itu neraka, dan siapa yang berada di dalamnya. Bersedihlah kerana jika di saat ini juga dia mati, selama-lamanya dia tidak akan dapat walau menghidu sekalipun bau syurga melainkan dengan izin Allah yang Maha Perkasa. Takutlah yang pada saat itu dia akan salahkan kita kerana tidak menyampaikan pesanan kepadanya dan mengheret kita bersamanya ke neraka.

Tapi usahlah berputus asa.

Sesungguhnya putus asa itu tiada dalam kehidupan orang yang mengucapkan kalimah syahadah. Bukankah kita telah berikrar bahawa tiada yang layak disembah melainkan Allah, bahawa kita adalah hamba-Nya yang berada dalam perjanjian dengan-Nya, dan akan menjaga perjanjian itu dengan sedaya upaya. Meskipun penyebar fitnah itu berjaya mendapatkan sokongan seluruh umat manusia, namun kita umat Islam mempunyai sokongan yang kekuatannya tidak dapat dibandingkan sekalipun dengan seluruh kekuatan jin dan manusia, yakni kekuatan Maha Pencipta, yang Menguasai hari Akhirat. Teruskanlah dakwahmu, usah tersadung semata-mata kerana kata-katanya yang kesat, jangan mengeluh kerana saat itu syaitan akan mengetawakanmu.

Ajarkanlah kepadanya tentang Islam.
Dengan perilaku dan perbuatanmu. Dengan jujur ikhlas tutur katamu. Dengan hatimu yang tidak henti-henti mendoakannya mendapat hidayah. Biarpun hatimu dikerat-kerat oleh kata-katanya yang tajam daripada pedang, usahlah kerana itu kamu mendoakan musibah ke atasnya sedangkan Rasulullah SAW juga mengakui yang kedatangan baginda bukanlah sebagai pembawa musibah, sebaliknya adalah seorang pemberi peringatan. Bukankah kamu sentiasa teringin membawa walau seorang pun saudara baru ke dalam lingkungan agamamu? Mengapa kamu teragak-agak tatkala maruah agamamu dihenyak-henyak sedangkan orang yang menghenyak itu adalah orang yang masih belum mengetahui? Berlaku adillah! Allah menyukai orang yang berlaku adil.

Yakinlah pada Allah, redhalah akan ketentuannya.
Meski taktik-taktik dakwahmu tidak berjaya menawan hatinya, mungkin masih ada sinar kecil di situ yang kamu tidak mengetahui, tetapi Allah mengetahuinya. Mungkin ada orang-orang di sekeliling kamu yang terdengar budi bicara kamu tentang indahnya Islam dan dari situ mereka mula mengenal Allah. Kita tidak tahu, tetapi Allah itu ilmuNya Maha Luas.

Bersabarlah. Saya juga tahu bahawa sabar itu amat susah. Sepertimana kesedihan adalah naluri semulajadi manusia, begitu juga marah. Namun yang mengapi-apikannya adalah syaitan sedangkan perkara yang kamu marahkan itu mungkin bersangkut paut dengan kepentinganmu sendiri. Nah, syaitan telah mengetawakan kamu bersama pengikut-pengikutnya! Sabarlah dengan kerenah manusia. Kita semua tidak dijadikan serupa, berbeza bangsa dan bahasa. Sejauh itu jugalah jauhnya beza perilaku kita. Akan tetapi kita telah diarahkan supaya berperilaku dan berperwatakan seorang Islam, maka apakah lagi yang kita mahu dalihkan? Sesungguhnya Allah Maha Sabar. Perhatikanlah, Allah yang ilmuNya meluas itu tidak menghukum manusia tergesa-gesa meskipun telah mengetahui sejak sebelum kejadian manusia lagi bahawa akan ada si fulan dan si fulan yang akan menderhakaiNya, yang akan mengingkari arahanNya, yang akan berbuat dosa-dosa besar. Subhanallah, Maha Suci Allah dari apa yang mereka sifatkan.

Kini, bergeraklah dengan efektif. Wajarkah kita membuang masa bersama orang yang telah disampaikan ayat-ayat Penciptanya kepadanya tetapi dia masih ingkar dan bersikap sombong lalu berpaling? Lihatlah sekelilingmu, betapa ramainya lagi yang memerlukan pengetahuan tentang Penciptanya! Bukan sahaja ahli keluargamu atau rakan-rakanmu, tetapi juga mereka yang Allah telah tetapkan pertemuanmu dengannya secara tiba-tiba. Antara orang yang belum tahu dan orang yang sudah tahu, yang manakah harus kita utamakan? Dan antara orang yang mencari dan orang yang mengetahui tetapi mengingkari, yang mana harus kita berikan lebih tumpuan? Kamu dan saya juga sama-sama mengerti.

Ingatlah janji-janji Allah. Tunaikan janji kita, Allah tidak pernah mengingkari janji.

Wahai diriku yang berubah-ubah, sesungguhnya mati itu benar, syurga itu benar, dan neraka itu benar. Ku pohon kepada yang Maha Mendengar itu mengabulkan doaku, kepada yang Maha Halus untuk menetapkanku dalam agama yang benar, kepada Penciptaku untuk mengasihani diri ini yang sering lalai dan alpa.

と聞かれたことがあります。

私は教師じゃなくて偉い者でもない人でありながら即答です。
神を信じているから。

でもまず、神とは何でしょう?
無宗教だとか、神なんか信じないとか最近の人々がよく言っています。
じゃあ、宗教とはなんですか?あなたにとって、神と宗教は、人間を縛る幻想の存在ですか?

では、クイズタイム。

Q: Windowsを有名にしたのは誰ですか?
A: ビル・ゲイツ

ですよね。

Q: 電話を作り始めたのは誰ですか?
A: アレクサンダー・グラハム・ベル

Q: あなたを生んだのは誰ですか?
A: 母親

では、母親を生んだのは?
祖母ですね。

で、祖母を生んだのは?

同じことを繰り返して、やっと最初の人間にたどり着きます。
この人は、アダムと呼ばれて、男の人でした。ご存知ですよね。だけど、男の人は産むことが出来ない!だったら、どうやって嫁を見つけて子供を産んでもらうの?っていうか、そもそもこの人どこから来たの??みたいなこと、考えたことありますか?

猿から進化したとは決して思わないでください。何かから進化したとでも思うな。創られたのです。
人間が作った何かのように、神は人間を土から創りました。とりあえず、全てを創ったのは神です。

簡単ですよね、神の定義は。
全てを創ったから、すべてを管理しているはずですよね。創ったし管理してるから、すると良くなることと、してはいけないことをすべて知っている。

つまり一般的に人間にとっての神とは:
1.全てを創った
2.全てを管理している
3.全てを知っている
存在です。

問題です。
もし創ったのは神ではなかったら、誰が創ったのですか?いつの間にか現れたわけですか?

もしあなたにとって創ったのは神ではなく自然だったら、あなたはまだ神のことを理解していないのです。

神と言えば、どんな存在なんでしょう。きっと強くて、巨大な力を持つ存在ではりませんか?
何かに敵わないものは神とは呼べませんよ。
神は一番強い存在ではないといけないのです!
強くなければ、頼る必要ないじゃない?私たちは、強いものに頼りたいのではないでしょうか。だからこそ神だと自分が思っている存在に祈ってるんじゃないですか?

頼られるものにはそれを叶う力がないといけない。もし神が創ったものと神が創らなかったものの両方があったら、神が創らなかったものに関した知識も力もありません。もし戦争と苦しみは神が創ったものではなかったら、どうすれば人間から苦しみを消すことが出来ますか?もし神に全てを叶う力がなかったら、人間は頼りませんよね?だけど、すべてを叶う力がないものは神と呼べません。何でも叶う力がないといけないのです。

よって、神とは一番強くて、何でも叶う力がある存在です。それこそが神なのです。

では、宗教とはなんですか?
たったの法律でしょうか?

回答:宗教とは生き方です。

あなたは自分が無宗教というのなら、あなたは間違っています。科学を参考にして生きているのなら、あなたの宗教は科学です。アニメのために生きているのなら、アニメがあなたの宗教です。わかりますよね?

今まで神の存在と宗教を否定してきた自分の理由は分かっているのでしょうか?すでに気づいているかもしれませんが、多くの人はユーニックになりたいからです。昔から人は宗教と神を意識しながら生きてきました。文化の一部でもあり、とても大切にしていました。新時代が来て、人はずっと大切にしていたことを捨てて、特別な人として見られたくなりました。気付きましたか?家族も捨てて、文化も捨てて、法律も捨てて、やがて宗教も捨てました。不良のやっていることとほぼ同じです。

今あなたたちが守っている文化というもの、果たして本当に文化だからこそ守っているのでしょうか?ただ馴れ馴れしくて、楽しいからやっているのではありませんか?

文化の定義と真実は、ここで説明しないので、自分で見つけてください。ここまで来たから、それぐらいはあなたならできると思います。

だらだら言うつもりはないです。
ちゃんと定義を分かってもらえないと、これからの話が難しくなります。基礎的なことで議論してしまいます。私はそういう無駄な事を避けたいです。

死とはなんですか?

試練を終りで、永遠の人生の始まりである。

詳しく説明してください。

この世はあなたにとって全てですか?

そうじゃないかもしれませんね。

その通り。もしこの世がすべてだったら、わざわざ人にやさしくする必要がなくなります。強ければ生き伸びれる世界になります。なぜなら、幸せになるのなら今のうちですから。ここがすべてだったら、なんで自分の幸せを譲らないといけないですか?人間の本能は幸せを求めることです。楽に生きていたい。美味しいものを食べたい。素敵な人に出会いたい。

だけど、みんながああいう風にわがままであれば、何でもかんでも絶滅するんじゃないですか?

もしここがすべてだったら、他人の幸せを考える暇もありません。まずは自分を優先するでしょう。

それに関して私は同感できません。

あなたは、お腹を空かせて死にかけたことはありますか?100人の男に侵されたことはありますか?片足を爆弾で失くしたことはありますか?

ないけど、それとこれと関係ないでしょう。

関係あります。あなたの生活が満たされているからこそ、あなたは生きのびることの意味がわかっていないです。自分が苦しめられると、人のことを考える暇がなくなるんです。自分だけのことを考えるようになるのです。

でもそれは皆じゃないでしょう。ものすごくいい人もいるんだから。私は見たことがあります。

いますよ。もちろん。でもあなたならできますか?

やってみないとわからない。でもやる必要ないと思います。みんなが平和に生きていたら、ああいう苦しみを繰り返す必要はないです。

「(私は)あなたたちを(あなたたちが)汚い(とみている)液体から創ったのではなかった?
そしてそれを丈夫なところにおいたのだ。

決めるのは私、私が誰よりもよく決めるのだ。
滅びろ!信じない者たちよ!
地球を集まる場所として作らなかった?
生きている人と死んでいる人(が集まる場所)。
そしてそこに高い山を創り、あなたたちに味の刺激しない水を与え飲ませた。
滅びろ!信じない者たちよ!」

ってかなんで信じない人は滅びろとか言われんのですか?神様は優しいはずでは?

優しいですよ。むちゃくちゃ優しい。残酷な存在であれば、酸素さえ信じない人に与えないのでは?よく考えてください。

それはそうですね。

この世界で私たちは試されているのです。合格する人は、死んだあとに天国に行き、永遠に苦しみのない想像を超える幸せの中に生きます。落ちた人は地獄で永遠に拷問されます。死はそういうことです。試練の終わりの印。決して地獄に落ちたくないから、一生懸命神の望み通りに生きていくのです。

もちろんこの世でも幸せに暮らしていたいけれど、この世の幸せは長続きはしません。死後の幸せを求めるのなら、自分を犠牲にしてやるべきことをやるのです。

どうすれば合格できますか?

人にやさしくする。他人を思う。困った人を助ける。親のない子を守って育ててあげる。食べもののない人に食べさせる。抑圧された人を助け出し、抑圧する人を罰する。徹底的に殺人、不倫、横領、強盗などをなくす。人が幸せになるものを作る。勉強をする。仕事をする。結婚をする。

ちょっと待って。そこまで行きますか?最後の三つって関係あるんですか?

ええ、ありますよ。とりあえずみんなが幸せになれるように努めれば、それこそが合格のカギです。

ちなみに何をすれば地獄に落ちますか?

人を悲しませる、困らせるようなこと。だけど、一番大きな理由は神の全てを認めないこと。

ええ?もしかして、優しいひとでも神を信じなければ地獄に落ちますか?

そうですよ。びっくりしていますか?

びっくりしますよ!そういうの不公平でしょう!

あなたは、神が不公平だと思いますか?

思いません!

なんなら神の決めることを信じれば?あなただって、私だってわかりませんよ、人の心に潜む闇を。だけど神はちゃんとわかっています。どんな決断だって、理由があります。ところで、私は知っていますよ、ものすごく優しかったのに地獄に落とされた人を。

誰ですか?

でも、よく考えたら、その考え方って、ただ現実から逃げたいからじゃないですか?

悲しいことも、苦しいこともないのに、なんで私には逃げる必要がありますか?

私が悲しいのは、もっと人に神のことを伝えられないこと。それが悔しいですが、まだ諦めていませんから大丈夫です。それ以外は、本当にないです。むしろ苦しかったほうがいいかもしれません。私の体力と能力が測れるから。(笑)

ありえません。あなたにだって苦しみがあると信じています。

どうぞ御好きに。私には人の意見を変える力なんてないので。そういう力は神様にしかない。頭を冷やして考えてきてください。あなたは今、死の準備はできていますか?

あなたこそできているのですか?

どうでしょう。試験の準備が出来たと思ったのに結局落ちてしまった人のことを聞いたことありますよね?そのように考えれば私の状況がわかるでしょう。

そうですか。わかりました。これがあなたの意見ですね。まさかこんなにぶつかるとは思いませんでした。私は死の意味を問い続けます。真の答えが見つかるまで。

一つだけ言わせてもらいたい。よ~く考えてください。今まであったこととこれから起こることを全部。私はあなたのことを面白い方として思っています。

We may choose not to forget, but we must forgive

As human beings, each of us has an inherent tendency to deviate from the straight path to do stupid things, awkward things. Not a day passes when a person can be certain that "today I have made no mistakes."

At times we are oblivious of the fact that we are doing wrong; and at times we consciously and deliberately do things we know we ought not to. These wrongs may cause agony to others or even bring physical pain and suffering to them. As rational beings endowed with the freedom of choice, we are responsible for our actions and are answerable before Allah (God) the Almighty. For this reason, we are constantly in need of Allah's forgiveness.

Allah tells us in the Quran, which Muslims believe is the word of God, that He is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful. Allah has a number of names that imply different aspect of His Forgiving nature. He is called Al-Ghafur (the Most Forgiving) and Al-Afuww (the One Who heals and restores our honor).

He is also called Al-Tawwab (the Acceptor of repentance). This word has the sense of "oft-returning" , which implies that Allah accepts our repentance again and again. We make mistakes and when we become conscious of it, we repent to Allah, and Allah accepts our repentance. Then again, we do wrong and repent to Him, seeking His forgiveness, and He forgives.

Allah is called Al-Rahman and Al-Raheem too, which mean "the All-Merciful" and "the All-Compassionate" respectively. The two words indicate that Allah is ever merciful to all of His creations, and most particularly to His obedient servants. Indeed Allah's mercy is unbounded and His love is infinite.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to pray: "O Allah, You are the All-Forgiving One, You love to forgive, so forgive me" (At-Tirmidhi) . Without exception, all of us badly need Allah's mercy and forgiveness all the time.

Allah in the Quran teaches us that we humans should strive our utmost in cultivating within ourselves the qualities of mercy and forgiveness. The Prophet has taught us:

Allah is only merciful with those who show mercy to others. (Al-Bukhari)

The believers in their mutual love, mercy and sympathy are just like one body. When one of the limbs suffers, the whole body responds to it with sleeplessness and fever. (Muslim)

There were several events in the life of the Prophet that demonstrate how merciful and forgiving he was even to his enemies. For instance, on his return to the city of Makkah after his victory, the Prophet was face to face with his brutal persecutors who fought him for many years, and murdered many of his followers. Now he had full power and his enemies were at his feet,pleading for mercy. Making that moment a historic one unparalleled in history, the Prophet told them simply, "No blame on you today. Go, you are all free" (Ibn Hisham).

The Prophet's exemplary character and his personal example left a deep impression on his Companions. No one exemplified the gentleness and the generosity of the Prophet in life more than his closest companion, Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq.

The name "Al-Siddiq" is actually a title that was given to him by Prophet Muhammad which means "the always truthful". It was Abu Bakr who was the foremost in standing steadfast beside the Prophet on all those occasions when others of less caliber faltered.

Abu Bakr was the very embodiment of magnanimity, nobility, and grace. He was one of the first to declare his allegiance to the Prophet, and from that moment on, nothing deterred him from the path of Islam, and no one was closer to the Prophet than him. Indeed, Abu Bakr was the first rich man in history who bought slaves just to give them freedom.

Lady Aishah, the wife of the Prophet, was the beloved daughter of Abu Bakr. This relationship was a bond that brought him close to the Prophet. There was an incident concerning Aishah that upset Abu Bakr and brought him great sorrow. The story is told in the biography of Prophet Muhammad and is usually referred to as the "incident of the slander."

It all began when Aishah accompanied Prophet Muhammad in one of his campaigns, and while returning, she happened to lag behind the caravan owing to her preoccupation with the search for a necklace she had lost in the desert. This detained her while the caravan continued the journey, believing that Aishah was with them. When she came back to the camping place she found no one, and she had no option but to remain there in the hope that her people would notice she was not with them and come back looking for her.

A man named Safwan, one of the Companions of the Prophet, was riding behind the army and he happened to see Aishah. He let her ride on his camel while he led them on foot to the caravan that was at the next halt.

After this, some people began spreading slanderous rumors connecting Aishah and Safwan. When Aishah knew about it, she was very agitated, and she went on weeping and praying to Allah to prove her innocence.

One can imagine how upset Abu Bakr was on knowing about the plight of his daughter. While some people stood by Aishah and believed in her innocence, many others took part in gossiping and spreading false rumors, and there was nothing Abu Bakr could do to spare his daughter this pain.

Some time later, after Aishah, Abu Bakr, and Prophet Muhammad had endured much pain and stress due to this incident, a revelation came to the Prophet declaring the innocence of Aishah, and castigating the slanderers. Allah says in the Quran what means:

[It was a group from among you that concocted the lie — do not consider it a bad thing for you [people]; it was a good thing — and every one of them will be charged with the sin he has earned. He who took the greatest part in it will have a painful punishment. When you heard the lie, why did believing men and women not think well of their own people and declare, "This is obviously a lie"? And why did the accusers not bring four witnesses to it? If they cannot produce such witnesses, they are the liars in God's eyes. If it were not for God's bounty and mercy towards you in this world and the next, you would already have been afflicted by terrible suffering for indulging in such talk. When you took it up with your tongues, and spoke with your mouths things you did not know [to be true], you thought it was trivial but to God it was very serious. When you heard the lie, why did you not say, "We should not repeat this — God forbid! — It is a monstrous slander"? God warns you never to do anything like this again, if you are true believers.] (An-Nur 24:11-17)

How consoling that revelation was to both Aishah and her father, Abu Bakr. The Prophet himself was greatly relieved at having the innocence of his beloved wife proven.

It is clearly mentioned that the accusation was false, and the whole incident would teach Muslims the importance of saying the truth and not speaking ill of others. Muslims are also given a wonderful example in the way such a complicated situation was handled by Prophet Muhammad, Aishah, and Abu Bakr, as they all bore the pain patiently seeking the pleasure of Allah. Abu Bakr came to know that one of the persons who played a key role in the spreading of the slander was a person called Mistah ibn Uthatha.

Abu Bakr, being such a great and generous man, used to spend of his own wealth to support many destitute persons. Mistah was one of those people who relied on the financial support he received from Abu Bakr. After finding out that Mistah had taken part in slandering his daughter, Abu Bakr was very angry with him and decided to stop the financial support he was providing him.

However, Allah's revelation came to Prophet Muhammad saying what means:

[Those who have been graced with bounty and plenty should not swear that they will [no longer] give to kinsmen, the poor, and those who emigrated in God's way. Let them pardon and forgive! Do you not wish that God should forgive you? God is All-Forgiving and All-Merciful. ] (An-Nur 24:22)

Abu Bakr felt the sting of this admonition, and immediately repented. Soon he corrected himself, and restored his liberal grant to Mistah. Thus, he forgave the man who took part in slandering his daughter, and mercifully continued to give of his own wealth in order to support him.

The refinement of the wild Arabs of the desert through the revelation of Allah and the example of His Prophet was in itself nothing short of miraculous. Indeed, Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq is ever one of the shining models for the whole of humanity to be found in the annals of Islam.
